The Vedda in Sri Lanka

The Vedda (also spelled Veddah) are the indigenous people of Sri Lanka, believed to be the island’s original inhabitants. They have a distinct culture, language, and way of life that has existed for thousands of years. Traditionally, the Vedda people were hunter-gatherers, living in forests and relying on hunting, fishing, and honey collection for survival. However, modern influences have led to changes in their lifestyle, with many now engaged in farming and other occupations. The Dambana village in the Uva Province is one of the last remaining strongholds of Vedda culture, where visitors can learn about their traditions, rituals, and unique way of life. The Vedda language, which has strong links to Sinhala, is still spoken among some community members. Despite facing challenges such as land loss and modernization, efforts are being made to preserve their heritage.
